Tuesday, February 7th, 2012
Meadhbh Monahan looks at the National Archives’ Anglo-Irish Treaty exhibition, launched 90 years after its signing, and discusses its significance with archivist Elizabeth McEvoy. An invoice for Harrods totalling £14 13s 1½d for items such as bon bons, fruit baskets and peppermint lumps is among the array of bureaucratic and “sometimes byzantine” records contained in the National Archives’ online ‘Treaty’ exhibition. Indeed, the meticulous recording of expenses for the journeys to and from England and the money spent on transport and accommodation is particularly relevant...[full story]

Twenty months into his role as Australian Ambassador to Ireland, Bruce Davis has been touched by his meetings with Irish families and communities searching for their Australian roots. These have been “opportunities to see the relationship [between the two countries] in all of its manifestations.” He explains: “In terms of the actual role as an Ambassador the most memorable events are the small, often community-based ones, where you’re coming across very...[full story]

: Dublin’s Culture Night

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
As hundreds of culture seekers ambled in and out of Dublin’s museums, galleries, churches and historic houses, the streets were filled with the sounds of music and excited voices. Meadhbh Monahan joined them for Culture Night. Not to be mistaken for another Friday night in the capital, Culture Night on 23 September offered something different for the families, couples and lone explorers taking in the array of sights and sounds. Colourful balloons denoted where free entrance and entertainment was available. Irish music wafted out of the Grand Social on Liffey Street, while the Tallaght...[full story]

Ireland’s new President swept to victory, promising to “make an Irishness we can be proud of in a real republic.” Meadhbh Monahan reports. The Presidency of Ireland is the highest office in the State and comes with the responsibility of dedicating one’s abilities to the service and welfare of the people of Ireland. Representing Ireland on the international stage and strengthening the trade and friendship links with “the global Irish family” is essential. Michael Daniel Higgins will take up the mantle from Mary McAleese and will be the first intellectual and poet to reside...[full story]

: Still going strong – The Horslips

Friday, August 19th, 2011
Thirty years have passed since the Horslips introduced their unique brand of ‘Celtic rock’, but the band is still playing packed out venues across Europe. Meadhbh Monahan speaks to bass player and vocalist Barry Devlin about their comeback. Described in the 1970s and 80s as “the band that defined a generation,” 62-year- old Barry Devlin reflects that the Horslips were in fact “a band that were defined by a generation.” The legendary five-man ensemble, who made Irish traditional music ‘cool’, played what they thought would be their final gig in Belfast’s Ulster Hall...[full story]

: Writing of age

Friday, August 19th, 2011
For 21 years the Rathmines Writers’ Workshop has been meeting every few weeks to give poets and prose writers a chance to share their work. Some of its longest serving members tell Stephen Dineen, a fellow member, about its journey. One doesn’t usually find much nostalgia at a 21st, but listening to James Conway, Mary Guckian and Christine Broe trade memories of the twenty-one years their community of writers has had together there is plenty of nostalgia for the experiences they’ve had and the people they’ve met. Whilst much has been said of demise in communities...[full story]

: A labour of love

Friday, May 13th, 2011
Former actor and film director Kevin Allen tells Meadhbh Monahan how he is finding life in rural Ireland and outlines his preparations for this year’s Flatlake Festival. The sleepy village of Scotshouse in County Monaghan, where the Hilton estate has stood since the 17th century, is a far cry from Hollywood, where Allen made a name for himself as a film director and producer. After the Welsh-born film executive pulls up in a tractor (returning from feeding his herd of organic pigs), he tells eolas about his transition from life in Los Angeles to being a full-time farmer and producer...[full story]

: Obama for Ireland

Thursday, March 31st, 2011
St Patrick’s Day put Ireland back in the spotlight, for good reasons, and the presidential visit will raise the spirits even higher. Peter Cheney sums up the 2011 trip. “Miracles do happen,” declared a buoyant Taoiseach, addressing his most powerful counterpart in the East Room a week after calling at the Áras. “One week in office” was enough for God to make the world and “if we keep this up, Ireland will be great again inside a very short time.” Clinching a full day in the president’s diary is a major ask for anyone, yet Ireland fills it with an almost ordinary regularity. Diplomats...[full story]
