Health and wellness programme with Lidl Ireland

Laya Healthcare and Lidl Ireland launch Ireland’s largest corporate cardiac screening programme. 

Last summer, laya healthcare’s Health & Wellness team worked closely with Lidl Ireland to create a bespoke Health & Wellness programme that Lidl rolled out nationwide to its employees. The three-month campaign combined Ireland’s largest corporate cardiac screening programme with a Walk to the Moon Step Challenge promoting health and wellbeing to the entire Lidl workforce.

The largest corporate cardiac screening involved a mobile HeartBeat cardiac screening service travelling to 61 locations, and screening 1200 Lidl employees from 143 stores. Lidl made this free screening available to all its employees as a result of one of the team discovering a serious heart defect in 2014 after a routine HeartBeat screening by laya healthcare. The Lidl employee’s ECG uncovered a number of holes in his heart which revealed that he was only processing – at a maximum – 50% of the oxygen he was breathing, and his heart could have stopped beating at any point. Post open-heart surgery, the Lidl team member is back to full health, and back in the gym.

 The second piece of the Health & Wellness programme was the Lidl Walk to the Moon Step Challenge which called on all Lidl employees, stores and departments to walk the 325,000 kilometres to the moon in aid of Lidl Ireland’s charity partner Barrettstown Gang Camp. Over 2,500 employees signed up, each receiving a starter pack containing a sports bag, a wearable pedometer, a reusable water bottle, a nutritional guide and FAQs.

Well-known RTÉ broadcaster and presenter of The Sunday Game – Michael Lyster – was brought on-board by Lidl and laya healthcare as a campaign ambassador. Michael raised awareness of the life-saving benefits of cardiac screening, and shared his own personal experiences of his heart issues to re-inforce the campaign’s preventative health message.

After a hugely successful health and wellness campaign, laya healthcare will continue to work with Lidl Ireland delivering their health and wellness needs, and bringing innovation to the fore of their employee engagement campaigns.
